Hello, somewhat-neglected blog! It’s been a busy life of work, housework and recovery from all that. I find life to be a lot more draining than it used to be. Is it my age, or is it the age we’re in? Probably, it’s a mix of both.
I’ve been a busy reader despite it all. And I’ve been working on a paranormal murder short story, as well as improving my editing knowledge through a self-guided course from the Editorial Freelancers Association, of which I am a member.
Some of the works I’ve read over the first quarter of the year:
- Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
- Olga Dies Dreaming by Xochitl Gonzalez
- A Red Death by Walter Mosley
- Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned by Walter Mosley
- Kindred by Octavia E. Butler
- Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey
- The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. LeGuin
- At the Mountains of Madness by H. P. Lovecraft
- The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver
- The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver
- Babel by R. F. Kuang
I intend to review a few of these books, time permitting. We’ll see if it actually happens!
Currently I’m reading (rather slowly) a book for my professional development as an editor: 5 Editors Tackle the 12 Fatal Flaws of Fiction Writing by C.S. Lakin with Linda S. Clare, Christy Distler, Robin Patchen and Rachell Starr Thomson.
This is a book you’ll want to take your time with. It includes exercises to help you detect these flaws and write your way out of them. In some cases, I’m going to have to revisit certain chapters to finish those exercises!
Professional development is a necessity for me as I yearn toward the future and work on strengthening the skills I plan on tapping into for my pseudo-retirement. I don’t have enough saved to ever actually retire, so I will be editing/writing (hopefully) for my supper. I enjoy editing/writing, so it’s not a bad bargain.
