EDITOR’S NOTE: Added the Scripps layoffs to the roundup, which were announced a couple months ago.
All the news fit not to print!
Will I start compiling this as part of a balanced media meal? Who knows. This “blog” has been all over the place as I am on a midlife exploration of what the hell do I want to do next (or who will pay).
Layoff news! Just this week, the week before Thanksgiving, because just before the holidays is the perfect time to lay media folks off.
Tegna has laid off marketers and others nationwide to “consolidate operations,” according to Fits News. The chatter on Reddit indicates that some of those jobs were lost to AI, with threats of more as the new CEO is a tech bro who is apparently infatuated with AI.
Hearst Magazines, which include 25 brands such as Esquire, is “reallocating resources,” the Hollywood Reporter said Thursday.
Scripps News announced in September it was winding down its national news coverage.
Probably there are others I’m missing.
The amount of AI-related writing jobs I’ve seen is disturbing. Is that really the way everything is going? Are they really going to succeed in shoving that nonsense down our throats? I know they’re trying to sell it like it’s just another time-saving tool, not the Armageddon for us humanities majors that it’ll likely be, but honestly I want nothing to do with AI. So shove it, WordPress!
I’m trying to maintain my morale with unplugging from the matrix more and fretting less. I promise I’ll have better quality content soon. Yeah, right…
Happy Thanksgiving!
